Qual a diferença de “in the end” e “at the end”?

Mais uma daquelas pequenas dúvidas de qual preposição seria a correta, “in the end” ou “at the end”? Vamos aprender a usar cada uma delas nos lugares certos.

Para começar vamos analisar esses dois exemplos:

a-) He get paid at the end of the month. (ele terá pago no final do mês).

b-)She didn’t want to let us in at first but in the end she agreeded. (Ela não queria nos deixar entrar no começo, mas no final ela concordou).

“At the end (of something)” é usado para indicar o momento em que algo termina. Portanto, não é possível dizer “in the end of something”. E,g.: “in the end of the film”; “in the end of the month”. Devemos dizer “at the end of the film” = “”the moment that the film ended”; “at the end of the month”.

O oposto de “at the end” é “at the beginning” ou “in the beginning”:

c-) At the beginning, she had only four students. (No começo, ela apenas tinha quarto alunos).

“In the end” significa “finalmente” (= at last, finally) e é usado quando queremos indicar o resultado de uma determinada situação:

d-) Jenny couldn’t decide where to go for the holidays. In the end she decided to stay home and do some gardening. (Jenny não pôde decider onde passer as ferias. No fim ela decidiu ficar em casa e cuidar do jardim).
